Water Stewardship

Reduce water intensity toward water stewardship goals

// 01 THE CUSTOMER

Overview

Anheuser-Busch InBev is the world’s largest brewer.

  • Operating more than 200 breweries around the world.

  • $50 billion annual revenue.

  • 500+ beer brands.

// 02 CHALLENGE

The challenge

  • AB InBev is one of the most efficient water users in the brewing industry. It has a water use ratio of 2.7 :1. The industry average is around 4: 1.

  • Water is used throughout the brewing process, including in boiling, fermentation, filtration, and packaging.

// 03 GOALS

Sustainability goals

  • Reach water use efficiency of 2.5 :1 by 2025, and 2.0 :1 in water-stressed areas.

  • 100% water net positive in communities with high water stress.

  • Reduce carbon emissions by 25% across the entire value chain by 2025. Net-zero by 2040.

// 04 SOLUTION

The solution

The CIP process uses a large amount of water through nozzles and tanks, along with the use of chemical agents for cleaning.

The cleaning parameters such as PH levels, temperature, and spray pressure determine not only cleaning efficiency, but also the water use intensity.

A-Stack ingests data from sensors and the CIP equipment in real-time, and automates the data cleansing and structuring.

A-Stack analytics engine analyzes data using diagnostics models which identify inefficient parameters that drive water use.

Atomiton team works with AB InBev operations staff to implement the recommendations given by the analytics engine and quantify water savings.

// 05 RESULTS

Impacts

  • Atomiton delivered water use insights and water savings to the CIP process at AB InBev breweries.

  • 18.5% reduction in nozzle water use.

  • 22% reduction in tank water use.
