Steam Optimization – Heating

Reduce Scope 1 emissions and lower fuel costs

// 01 THE CUSTOMER

Overview

Vopak is the world's leading independent tank storage company.

  • Operating in 23 countries.

  • Storage capacity 35.6 million com.

  • 70 terminals worldwide.

// 02 CHALLENGE

The challenge

  • At Vopak fuel and electricity represent the largest source of controlled emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2).

  • Steam is also a significant source of emissions. At most terminals steam is generated onsite using fuel or electricity.

// 03 GOALS

Sustainability goals

  • Cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

  • Net Zero by 2050.

  • Achieve utility cost savings and energy efficacy.

// 04 SOLUTION

The solution

Steam is used to heat products in storage tanks and rail cars at the terminal. Some of the products require high temperatures to maintain, such as asphalt.

Steam is generated onsite using multiple boilers. Frequently excess steam was generated compared to the actual demand, which wasted natural gas and led to more carbon emissions.

Due to frequent product and weather changes, a conventional feedback loop for the steam system is not sufficient to optimize its supply-demand balance.

A-Stack ingests steam boiler and control valve data, as well as product property data. With AI, it discovers the relationship between various operational factors and the steam demand.

A-Stack analytics used production schedule data to forecast the steam demand ahead of time and recommend the optimal steam settings.

The Atomiton team worked with Vopak terminal teams to implement the changes and quantify the emission reduction.

// 05 RESULTS

Impacts

Atomiton delivered significant emission reductions at Vopak’s savannah terminal, including:

  • 19% natural gas saving.

  • 1110 metric tons of CO2e averted.
