Steam Optimization – Chemical Processing

Reduce carbon footprint and optimize energy source mix

// 01 THE CUSTOMER

Overview

Arboris is the world’s leading manufacturer of plant sterols and pine chemicals derived from natural compounds found in pine trees.

  • The largest producer of phytosterols and offer a broad portfolio of bio-based industrial chemicals.

// 02 CHALLENGE

The challenge

  • At Arboris steam is one of the largest sources of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

  • Most of the steam is generated onsite using a combination of purchased electricity and fuel.

  • Some additional steam is purchased from 3rd parties.

// 03 GOALS

Sustainability goals

  • Reduce steam consumption and CO2 emissions.

  • Cut natural gas bills.

// 04 SOLUTION

The solution

Steam is used for the product refining process 24/7. However, product mix changes and weather conditions dictate that the steam demand changes dramatically from time to time.

Steam is generated onsite using multiple boilers. Frequently excess steam was generated compared to the actual demand, which wasted natural gas and led to more carbon emissions.

The passive feedback loop for the steam system is not adaptable enough to optimize its supply-demand balance.

A-Stack ingests steam boilers data, as well as production and weather data. With AI, it discovers the relationship between various production and external factors and steam demand.

A-Stack analytics forecast the steam demand ahead of time and recommend the optimal steam settings.

The Atomiton team worked with Arboris teams to implement the changes and quantify the emission reduction.

// 05 RESULTS

Impacts

Atomiton delivered significant emission reductions including:

  • 19% natural gas saving.

  • 1110 metric tons of CO2e averted.
